OCEAN VIEW PLAZA
(AKA CANNERY ROW MARKETPLACE)
Between El Torito and the Chart House restaurant lies this last
best view along Cannery Row. In the midst of this view is Stohans,
an historic fish reduction plant. Check
the Coast Weekly article 3/7/02 for more info.

The Cannery Row Marketplace, see profile on the right, was proposed
for this site. The Save Our Waterfront Committee and others lead
opposition to this massive condo and retail development. That plan
proposed to demolish Stohans and did in fact demolish the historic
San Xaiver warehouse on another part of the site. The Cannery Row
Marketplace was denied.
The (no) Ocean View Plaza, the revised revised proposal for this site, has been approved by City Hall. Although the developers claim it has been "scaled down," it is hard to tell the difference from their drawings and specifications. As you can see in the mock profiles below, there will be little or no view left from the street along Cannery Row as the two new building on the bayside of Cannery Row will tower over the street. From the Recreation Trail, where this picture was taken, there will be a "view" through the slot between the two inland buildings (see the picture at the bottom.
The "revised revised" project remains VERY massive:
- four stories and 45 feet tall – 2 feet taller than the Aquarium, along Cannery Row. 30 feet above the Recreation Trail.
- 38 luxury condos – which will very likely become time shares or other short term rentals, a subversion of the prohibition on new hotels and a way to avoid the transient occupancy tax.
- 13 "affordable" condos.
- 377 parking spaces.
- 30,000 square feet of resturant space
- 61,984 square feet of retail space
- no water! They are proposing a private desal plant and City Hall has agreed to be the required Community Services District.
